Following your own path, with a close-knit team behind you
Sometimes a new opportunity comes along at exactly the right moment. When Nienke was approached about a position as an inspector at Normec VRO, she was ready for a new challenge. She had never imagined herself working as an inspector, but her interest was sparked immediately. "The independence of the role appealed to me straight away." And to this day, that independence remains one of the things she enjoys most about her job.
Freedom and trust
As an inspector, Nienke visits a variety of organisations and carries out inspections. No two days are the same, and neither are the clients she works with. The variety keeps the work interesting, but for Nienke, it is the trust she receives that truly makes the difference.
"I have a lot of freedom in how I organise my work. No one is constantly looking over your shoulder or checking what you're doing. There's simply an assumption that you'll do your job well."
That trust creates room to take ownership, make your own decisions and continue developing yourself. At the same time, she never feels like she's on her own.
A team that's there when you need it
Although inspectors work independently much of the time, Nienke still feels part of a close-knit team. "We're all responsible for our own inspections and reports, but whenever you run into a challenge, there's always someone willing to help or offer a second opinion."
That combination is exactly what makes working at Normec so enjoyable for her. Everyone has their own responsibilities, yet colleagues support one another without hesitation whenever needed. "You receive such a warm welcome here. I noticed that from day one."
When Nienke joined Normec, she had to learn an entirely new profession. Thanks to the knowledge, experience and support of her colleagues, that step felt much less daunting.
Growing through experience
In the beginning, Nienke focused mainly on building knowledge and gaining experience. Today, she carries out more complex inspections and can clearly see how much she has learned over the years. "I've become much more confident in my abilities."
That growth didn't happen overnight. By gaining experience, taking on new challenges and steadily building her expertise, her confidence grew naturally along the way. What helped most? Having the freedom to take initiative and the trust to find her own way.
Work that makes a difference
What Nienke values most about her work is knowing that she contributes to fair working conditions every day. It's often when an inspection highlights something that needs improvement that she realises just how meaningful her work is.
"If I identify a non-conformity, I know that the organisation will need to take action. Ultimately, that helps ensure employees receive what they're entitled to. Good working conditions should never be taken for granted. Being able to contribute to that gives me a real sense of purpose."
For Nienke, working at Normec is much more than a role that unexpectedly crossed her path. It's a place where she is trusted, encouraged to keep growing, and able to make a real impact alongside colleagues who genuinely support one another.
